`I first met Winston Churchill in the early summer of 1906 at a dinner party to which I went as a very young girl. Thus begins this enchanting memoir, originally published in 1965, the year of Churchill's death. At the time of their first encounter, the author was the 19 year old daughter of H.H. Asquith, then Chancellor of the Exchequer and later Prime Minister, and Churchill, 32, was holding his first office as Under-Secretary for the Colonies. The narrative ends in 1916 when Churchill stepped down as First Lord of the Admiralty. He and the author, a Liberal all her life, remained friends despite what she calls often `passionate disagreement... vehemently expressed...'
