The Kermadec region between New Zealand's North Island and Tonga and is one of the last relatively untouched wilderness areas on the planet. The product of violent collision between two continental plates, it is globally significant for its geology. It is a cradle of life: a place isolated by deep water, with an arc of undersea volcanoes stretching its length. It teems with birds, whales, dolphins, fish, turtles and other unique sea creatures, many of which exist only there. In May 2011 the Kermadec initiative of the Pew Environment Group invited nine artists and broadcaster Marcus Lush to join them on a voyage through the Kermadec region of New Zealand. As seariders on HMNZS Otago, the Kermadec artists voyaged from Auckland to Raoul Island and then on to Tonga. In this book the artist record their impressions of the voyage and the Kermadecs.
