Photographic pictorial of Wellington focusing on the 1980s architectural boom. Wellington, at the time of publication, could justly claim to be the most rapidly developing city in the southern hemisphere. The rebuilding of New Zealand's capital was not without controversy. Seen as a ruputure in its links with the past is it natural to mourn the passing of the familiar. However, if the replacement of an old building with one of higher safety standards results in the saving of a single life or the avoidance of serious injury, it was considered worth the effort, and the expense. Many cities have been rebuilt after a disaster, but the rebuilding of Wellington proceeded before such an occurrence, with the hope that it would avoid the fate of other less fortunate cities. In retrospect, and in the wake of the Christchurch earthquake, where the greatest loss of life was in newer buildings, and as Wellington faces its latest round of earthquake strengthening, the process is still controversial...
