Domesday Preserved

The Domesday Book is one of the foremost English records, unparalleled in contemporary Europe, and used as a legal document, from which there is no appeal, from the 12th century to the present. The two volumes were first rebound in 1952, adding a great deal to knowledge of the compilation of the text and the way in which the larger volume was written. In 1986, which marked the 900th anniversary of the volumes, further investigations and study were carried out, and both volumes dismantled, conserved and photographed before rebinding, to allow the publication of a full-colour facsimile.
