Shane Cotton is one of New Zealand's leading contemporary painters. The large body of work he has produced over the past 15 years has helped redefine the nature of contemporary Maori artistic practice. Dealing with issues of land, spirit and identity - and focussing on historical and contemporary exchanges between Maori and Pakeha - his work has also contributed to ongoing debate about postcolonial New Zealand identity.
