When Major Bowie lost his life in World War One his son Mick, then still at school, decided he should help his family by earning hiw own living. A period of farm work and odd jobs in the back country of New Zealand led him, in 1929, to apply for guide duties at the Hermitage, Mount Cook. From then onwards, barring service in World War Two in which he was seriously wounded, Mount Cook became his life and his home.
