In September 1522, a battered ship appeared on the horizon close to Spain's southwestern coast. A severely malnourished crew of just 18 men were suffering terribly from scurvy. Most of their shipmates were dead. The ship was called Victoria. Three years before, she had set sail with Magellan, one of five ships in a glorious fleet, and one of the largest and best-equipped expeditions in the Age of Discovery. Their ambition was as old as the human imagination. They were to sail west until they reached the east, and then sail on in the same direction claiming all undiscovered lands for the Spanish crown.
