Beckenham: A Suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand

Compared with older suburbs, such as Sydenham and Fendalton, Beckenham as we know it is vry much a twentieth century development. In fact its present suburban character was still forming well into the 1950s. Within living memory, the loop area has changed from an almost entirely rural character to a suburb completely enclosed by metropolitan Christchurch. Beckenham is notable for the fact that in some respects it represents a typical cross-section of Pakeha New Zealand.
