Description

O.T.J Alpers landed at Napier in 1875 with his very poor Danish parents, neither of whom could speak a word of English. Fifty years later, he took his seat on the bench in that same town as a Supreme Court Judge, having already enjoyed success as an actor, teacher, journalist and author.

Before he died, Alpers wrote a book of reminiscences, piublished posthumously as Cheerful Yesterdays. Although this was very popular at the time, it left many aspects of his 'bizarre career' unexplored. Until, that is, Alpers' son Antony discovered that there was another book 'behind the published one' in the form of a large collection of letters, personal papers and other writings that he had not seen. Confident Tomorrows, Alpers' 'second posthumous book', is the result.
