A cemetery is generally thought of as a peaceful resting place. The Bolton Street Cemetery, lying only a short distance from Wellington's busy Lambton Quay, has had a restless history. From the fierce consecration debate of the 1840s to the contentious motorway issue of the 1960s, the cemetery's land, siting and maintenance have constantly been under critical fire. Nevertheless for 50 years a family lived in its midst, and a stone's throw from their door some of its members were laid to rest. Burial place, social document, green space: these are three strands of the cemetery fabric that weave their way through its past and present, and carry it into the future.
