Captian Jack (Surveyor and Engineer) The Autobiography |
Mackie, John |
$60.00 |
|
This is an outstanding story of an amazing man. His excellent memory and careful filing of information over the years has resulted in the production of this autobiography.
John Mackie's work in geology and then as an Inspector of Mines in Malaya was followed by his wartime experience. After being captured by the Japanese he spent three terrible years in the infamous Changi and Batu Lintang prison camps.
When he returned to New Zealand his main task in the 1950s was teaching land and mine surveying in Otago. This is when he became known affectionately as Captain Jack.
He began teaching surveyors at the University of Otago in 1963. This became a full four-year degree course in 1974. The National School of Surveying is a tribute to the vision and hard work of John Mackie and his early staff, and to his successors in the Chair of Surveying.
It is a measure of the man that at the age of 97 he can produce a book that will appeal to a wide audience. |

Perilous Seas |
Meecham, Roger (Jan) |
$30.00 |
|
Roger (Jan) Meecham was born in Devon, England and grew up with the sea and naval history all around him, which probably accounts for a life long love affair with the sea, both above and below the surface.
He joined the Royal Navy at 16 and trained as an armourer. Later at age 17 he qualified as a frogman and then became an aircrew rescue diver in support of aircrews landing and taking off from aircraft carriers.
In the 1960s he requalified as a navy free-swimmer using self contained air breathing apparatus. This allowed him to go deeper and explore historical shipwrecks previously accessible only by salvage divers.
He has dived around the coast of Britain and the Channel Islands, in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean as well as the Mediterranean, South China Sea, Tasman Sea and Red Sea, up a river in East Africa and down a sewer in West London.
After leaving the Royal Navy he carried on diving and moved to New Zealand to settle in Wellington. Now retired he has found the time to research and write the fascinating sea yarns that he had collected during a lifetime associated with the sea.
He has been married twice and has three daughters, one of whom is also a writer. Two daughters live in Wellington and the other in Sydney. His only son was killed in a climbing accident in 1994.
Roger still dives for recreation around the New Zealand coast.
Perilous Seas
Heroism, disaster, tragedy and treasure from around the world. Everyone will enjoy the excitement, drama and tensions of these stories. While some of the characters show the fallibility and frailty of mankind, others display the indomitable spirit of the national hero. |
