What's New at Arty Bees Books.
This is the spot to check out every week, as we bring you the latest on the fabulous, weird, interesting, intriguing, and wonderful books, big or small, mostly square-ish - although not always - that have come into the Arty Bees shops over the past seven days or so.
|
What's New at Arty Bees Courtenay Place
Vampires and romance. Of course they go together! We have books by Kerrelyn Sparks, Maggie Shayne, Sherrilyn Kenyon. To write vampire romances you must obviously have to have a y in your name. Why? (That's not a rhetorical question - if you know please tell us, it's been driving us crazy.)
A Guide to New Zealand Waterfalls by Johnny T. Cheng is a very specific travel book. All the waterfalls are rated on scenic value, walking ability and driving ability.
If you prefer your water more horizontal, we have the Wavetrack New Zealand Surfing Guide, which shows the best places to catch a wave. Continuing on that theme is The Way of the Surfer – Living it, 1935 to Tomorrow by Drew Kampion, A History of Surf Culture by Drew again in collaboration with Bruce Brown, and for a slant of a different kind, Walking on Water – The Spirituality of the World’s Top Surfers by Jeremy V. Jones.
Books in the kid’s information series Horrible Histories, The Knowledge and The Fame Files. Titles include Groovy Movies, Leaders and Emperors, The Angry Aztecs and The Frightful First World War.
Also for kids (of all ages) is John Christopher’s Tripods Trilogy and Cynthia Voight’s Dicey Tillerman series.
Two easy to understand guides aimed at children about New Zealand’s founding document. The Treaty by Mere Whaanga and The Treaty of Waitangi by Kevin Boon.
Other New Zealand titles this week include:
- Working with David - Inside the Lange Cabinet by Michael Bassett
- Recalling Aotearoa - Indigenous Politics and Ethnic Relations in NZ by Fleras & Spoonley

British Women Writers and Race, 1788-1818 - Narrations of Modernity by Eamon Wright covers the emergence of British modernity of women writers (including Jane Austen, Hannah More, Fances Burney, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Shelley and Maria Edgeworth) of diverse political & philosophical affiliations, and fills a gap in scholarship on feminist accounts of late 18th & early 19th century women's writing.
Whrew!
Looks really good though....
Our Cooking section is boiling over with scrumptious books. Save yourself money and have a gourmet meal at home. To start you off there’s New to Cooking – Simple Skills and Great Recipes for Fabulous Food by Lesley Waters. We also have all your favourite tv chefs like Jamie Oliver, Clarissa Dickson (One Fat Lady), Jo Seagar, Annabelle White and many more.

What's New at Arty Bees Manners Street
Pretty, pretty, yum, yum. Not all that glitters is gold, but as most of these books are painstakingly illustrated in gold leaf this collection may prove to be the exception to that rule.
Illuminated Manuscripts, Kells, ancient legends, prayers, and Books of Days are at Manners Street, with a large range of titles from Europe, India and the Near, Middle and Far East. (We have really only started pricing up a beautiful collection of these works of bibliographic art so stay tuned as there will be more titles to come over the following weeks / months.)

Neatby and some New Zealand Antarctic classics like Penguin Summer, Hillary expeditions and titles on the Erebus Disaster.

- The Encyclopaedia of Sexual Behaviour by Albert Ellis and Albert Abarbanel
And Now For Something Completely Different - African historical and political books, mostly from the 1950s to 1960s covering the turbulent post-colonial period, particularly in Nigeria.

And to top things off, we have Random titles and True Crimes this week:
- The Hoffa Wars - Teamsters, Rebels, Politicians and the Mob by Dan E. Moldea
|
- We have had a *spell* of books based on TV series, and very little space it put them including Buffy, Angel, Sabrina and spin off Salem the Cat books. We'll be hammering the Buffy books into the little gaps (just like stakes through a Vamp’s heart)
- On a very dissimilar note indeed we have had a collection of truly dreadful 1970’s randy spy thrillers (if you’re American read “horny” spy thrillers here) – Thrill to the exploits of the Coxman, The Man From Pansy (the limp wrist-ed spy) and other crimes against literature, erotica, and the thriller genre at large.
- Harrington on Hold'em: Expert Strategy for No-Limit Tournaments. Volume 1: Strategic Play, Volume 3: The Workbook. Dan Harrington & Bill Robertie (this is about card games)
- Destructive and Useful Insects by Metcalf, Flint and Metcalf - Third edition
- And lastly some fashion books – rather more history of fashion than "how to make a dress" with a few exceptions like Creative Dressing - Unique, Ageless, Subtle, Exciting Clothes for you to Make and Look Good in Year After Year by Kaori O'Conner.
This book is proof that there was more crimes against humanity in the 1980's than legwarmers.
